Bridges

What are bridges?

Bridges, or tooth bridges, are false teeth that “bridge” the gap between existing and missing teeth. They can be permanent or removable.

In addition to replacing missing teeth, bridges:

  • Beautify your smile
  • Make it easier to eat
  • Prevent your teeth from shifting
  • Prevent malocclusion

The practice can secure your bridges either by attaching them to existing, bordering teeth or by using dental implants.

What are the different types of bridges?

The practice offers three main styles of dental bridges:

Traditional bridges

Traditional bridges feature false teeth installed on top of implants or supported by dental crowns.

Maryland bonded bridges

Maryland bonded bridges use a porcelain framework that the practice bonds to the back of your supporting teeth, where they hold the false teeth in place.

Cantilever bridges

Cantilever bridges are false teeth supported only on one side by one or more crowns.

Fifth Avenue Dental Arts offers bridges made from porcelain, as well as:

  • Stainless steel
  • Metal alloy
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • All ceramic Zirconia

The practice helps you determine the right material for you based on the location of your bridge and your needs. For example, metal bridges work well in the back of your mouth, where they can provide strength, while porcelain bridges offer the advantage of a natural look.

Are bridges right for me?

Bridges might be right for you if you’re missing one or more teeth and want to maintain a healthy bite and a beautiful smile. When you come into the practice for a consultation concerning bridges, the provider starts by:

  • Taking X-rays of your mouth and teeth
  • Examining the shape and color of your existing teeth
  • Discussing your dental and general health history with you

If the team thinks that bridges are a good fit for you, they take an impression of your teeth so that they can produce the most natural-looking and well-fitting bridges possible.

How long do bridges last?

If you observe good oral hygiene and take care of your teeth, your bridges will likely last from five to seven years. If you don’t take care of your teeth, however, you may develop cavities on your supporting teeth, which put your bridges at risk.
